There has been a six-fold increase in the number of people treated for high cholesterol in less than a decade. Alcohol. 10 million adults regularly drink to excess. Know your limits.  Be drink aware. Excessive alcohol consumption costs the NHS £2.7 billion caring for drunks (811,000 hospital admissions) and costs society overall £25.1 billion each year. Two thirds of men who assault their partners do so under the influence of alcohol. If you feel you have a problem, get help.

Medicine. Number of prescriptions has soared with an aging and overweight population. Latest figures show that in 2007, people aged over 60 received an average of 42 prescriptions, compared with 22 in 1997. Nearly 800 million prescription were written in 2007, costing the NHS over £8 billion pounds. The largest area was for cardiovascular complaints.
